There are two things that scare the living daylights out of a burglar. The first is the sight or sound of a barking dog. How To Discipline Security Guards

Managing security guards can be quite challenging. Fairly or unfairly, they are sometimes underpaid or not given proper respect and this can create conflict and resentment. No one likes to be disciplined and security officers are no exception. It is always good to follow the below suggestions when one is forced to discipline guards for misbehavior or misconduct:

1) First get their side of the story. It’s quite possible that there is an error in the facts. Before one takes any kind of disciplinary action they must have their facts straight. It’s possible, in other words, that when the officer share their view of what occurred you may change your mind about their wrongdoing.

2) Always have a witness. This is very important, especially if the misconduct or action taken by the guard is serious. First of all, you have no idea how the officer may react. It’s good to have a backup person who can recite what happened should things get out of control. Moreover, if the officer denies that the conversation ever took place or recounts that it went down in a different way, you have a verifiable witness who can attest to your side in terms of how the conversation transpired.

3) Always write down what happened. Recount the events or ‘misbehavior’ as accurately as possible. Have the officer sign any kind of disciplinary measure that you may take. If the officer refuses to sign then put that in your notes or, if you want, even in the form that the guards will sign. These forms vary in style and content. The form itself should express the word ‘warning’ on it somewhere.

5) Make sure Post Orders exist. For those that don’t know what Post Orders are, they are rules an regulations that exist at any given account for officers to follow. The above is simply a short list of how to discipline officers. Always keep in mind their job is not an easy one. Try and have compassion and remember to first hear their side of the story. The officer may end up just admitting to the wrongdoing and practically be more willing to take the criticism.

Camera Security and Surveillance: The New Community Security

Every day I read articles on how this community is finding it too expensive to continue keeping a full time gate security guard on duty and have been receiving calls regarding communities losing their sense of security as the age of gated communities is falling prey to a falling economy. This can be a real source of concern for those residents who moved into the community for that very reason that the community had additional security benefits. There are answers that are economically feasible to those who feel that lack of security as the “age of the gated community” dwindles.

One option is to purchase and set up one’s own security or surveillance camera system. This can be done fairly economically and in the end may save the owner who is paying a monthly fee for the manned security gate some money. There are a variety of security and surveillance cameras to choose from and can vary anywhere from one camera to a 16 camera setup depending on your needs and desires in a system and coverage area. I would suggest that before you purchase any system that you talk to a security expert to get the best information as to the type of camera and number of cameras you need for your situation and which camera will give you the clearest picture factoring in weather conditions, lighting,etc.

Another option is one I have mentioned in a previous blog and that is to set up a neighborhood watch using security and surveillance cameras. The community as a whole can meet and see who resides where and what view they are best able to watch and set up a schedule for those interested in keeping an “eye” on the community and notifying neighbors of any foul play or anything suspicious so their neighbor can check it out or call law enforcement before a crime is committed or trouble occurs. If a number of neighbors are interested, this system can be worked out quite efficiently and make everyone more at ease knowing that security is still in place with a watchful eye!

The last option is would be to take turns driving through the community and keeping a watchful eye out. Now the trouble with this system is that no one can be everywhere at once and to me this could become boring very quickly and people might loose interest and then we are back to the beginning again. Now there may be those who disagree with me and that is fine, but I have found that most people prefer the sanctity of their own home. With camera surveillance and security one can stay at home and still keep that watchful eye out for both themselves as well as their neighbors.

5 Easy Steps to Improving Your Security Guard Service

When property managers hire security guard companies they have a picture in mind of what their contract security force will look like, but too often what they get is not what they pictured. What we have found is that most security guard companies are capable of providing the service that property managers want, but too often do not because of a lack of ongoing quality control procedures.

Security guard companies are unlike any vendor that a property manager usually hires. If you hire a painter, you can see whether or not they are doing their jobs by looking at the walls. But when you hire a security guard company, how often can you see whether the guard company is doing their job which includes running background checks and drug screenings, providing good training for your guards, and effectively monitoring and supervising your guards. In most instances they probably are, but it is important to implement a system of verification and quality control to ensure that problems associated with the lack of performing these jobs do not begin to occur.

In this article we will discuss five (5) easy steps to improving your security guard service and achieving what you picture as your ideal security guard force.

Screen Your Guards Qualifications

In many states, guards are mandated to have a specified amount of training before they can begin working as security guards. If your state is one of these states, ensure that your security guard company is compliant.

If you are in a state where there are no state requirements for guard certification, then investigate the type of training that is being provided by your security company and ask yourself does it seem adequate.

Additionally, is your security guard company performing background and drug screenings on all your guards BEFORE they send them to your property? If they are, they should be providing you with verifications. If not, why?

Another excellent way to screen whether the guard is a good fit for your property is to conduct a short “interview” to get a feel for the guard and to explain your expectations. This initial conversation can tell you a lot about what to expect from that guard and it gives you a chance to request a different guard if you feel that it is necessary.

Assess Guard Training

Although most security guard companies have a very thorough orientation that introduces each guard to the company itself, in many cases the guard’s orientation to his assigned property is not as complete. We call the orientation for the assigned property “Site Specific Training”. Find out what your site specific training looks like:

• Does it occur at your property?

• Who does the training?

• How long is each new officer trained?

• How long does the security company double bank? (Double banking is the process of having a veteran guard working at the same time as the new guard.)

• How thoroughly are your post orders explained?

Determine the answer to each of these questions and make sure that they fit with what you feel is adequate. You should even consider sitting in on your security guard company’s orientation and your site specific training to get an understanding of what goes into preparing a guard to work at your property.

Review Your Guard’s Supervision

Guard supervision is one of the more important factors of good security guard service. When security companies provide poor supervision, there is not enough emphasis placed on preventing mistakes, problems, and complaints. Lack of supervision also removes the opportunity for the guard to learn and better understand their duties. If the guards are not being supervised, they begin to feel that their work is not important and they begin to see themselves as less of a part of the security team. When guards do not feel like part of your team it typically leads to unacceptable practices such as unprofessional behavior, tardiness, and even theft.

Depending on the structure of your contract, on-site supervisors may not be included. If your contract does not require on-site supervision, how does your security guard company remotely supervise its guards? Outside of the normal security company field supervisor spot checks, the two methods of remote supervision that prove most successful are:

If your guards are required to make rounds of your property, then a system for tracking them while on duty is essential. Inspect Your Guards

After hours inspections of your guards are always great ways of finding out exactly what is happening with your security while you are not there. During these inspections, make sure to ask your security guards questions about their duties and responsibilities to ensure that they understand their jobs. In fact, we suggest having your security guards audited regularly, formally (i.e. post inspection) and informally (i.e. secret shopped) by a licensed security consultant as part of your ongoing security program.

Strategies For Security Guards When Dealing With Angry People

Security guards often find themselves in situations where they must deal with people who are angry, difficult or in an altered state of mind. This can range from a person being denied entry to party or event, or fielding the wrath of those who have been waiting in long lines or crowded, overpopulated areas. A basic knowledge of human psychology and a solid set of communication skills can greatly help when security officers and/or bodyguards are in these situations. There are several ways to diffuse a situation with an angry person or deal with difficult people in general, all of which relate to these types of skills and know-how.

Listening: When on the receiving end of an angry person, the security guard should demonstrate good listening skills, even if they know the agitated person is in the wrong. By letting the person vent their frustrations and have their say, he/she may become easier to deal with. One of the main reasons customers and everyday citizens lose their cool and become aggressive is the feeling that they are not being heard; a simple acknowledgement of their feelings can lessen the intensity of the situation. Let them know that they have valid reason to be upset and assure them that their situation is being handled as swiftly as possible.

Understanding: Security officers should attempt to empathize whenever possible to show understanding of why the person is upset. When appropriate, saying something like “I can imagine how frustrated you must be, and I apologize for the inconvenience,” is all a person needs to hear to take their anger down a few notches and redirect their feelings in a different way. Let them know that their feelings are important, and that their complaint will not go unnoticed. Be sure not to appear condescending when voicing your understanding; if the person feels belittled on top of everything else, their demeanor could intensify and the guard will have to work twice as hard to calm them down.

Not reacting: Most importantly, the officer should never react to a person’s aggression with more aggression. Though it is tempting to match this person’s tone and “stand one’s ground,” yelling back at an agitated person won’t accomplish anything productive and will make the officer or guard appear unprofessional. Guards should try to ignore insults and careless remarks as best they can, despite their growing frustration. Angry people often say things in the heat of the moment and don’t mean much of what they’re venting. Also, it’s appropriate and beneficial to admit mistakes if the situation calls for it; Security officers should not be afraid to gently correct false or inaccurate statements, but they must go about it as calmly as possible. A good example would be a person saying “I’ve been standing in line for hours”; the guard could respond with “My time clock shows it’s actually been 35 minutes, but I understand that it must feel like hours,” if that is the case.

Agreement: It can also be useful to attempt to agree with the angered person on something, even something arbitrary, as it’s an opening that can lead to other agreements in the conversation. Doing this temporarily shifts the power from the security guard who appears to be in charge of this person’s temporary fate to the person who feels they are being treated unjustly. If it’s a venue that the guard is patrolling and the person makes a comment about the poor customer service that they are experiencing, the guard could play both sides of the fence while remaining professional and seemingly validating the upset person; saying something like “Well, I don’t have any personal experience with the staff here, but you are not the first person to express dissatisfaction with them,” is a good way of staying neutral and controlling the person’s anger.

Security for International Business Travellers

The effects of globalisation have produced an enormous rise in the numbers of international business travellers, a trend that is only likely to increase, with the World Travel and Tourism Councils latest Economic Impact report for 2013 predicting an annual increase of over 3%. As the global economy begins to struggle free from the effects of the great economic slowdown this forecast increase may even be shown to be on the conservative side. International business trips are carried out by a cross-section of business people, from those individual traders and contractors simply representing themselves, through to representatives of huge multinational corporations. Many travellers will have taken the trouble to investigate aspects such as the climate and business cultural niceties at their destination, but increasingly, with the effects of the globalisation of threats from crime and terrorism, it is crucial that travellers are also aware of the security situation at their destination.

From the employers perspective, they have a duty of care towards their staff and contractors, and must be seen to have acted in a reasonable way, and taken all reasonable precautions, should the worst occur. Quite apart from the personal suffering involved, expensive litigation for negligence could be the least of the implications of failing to take appropriate precautions. Whilst sanity may well have eventually prevailed in a case at the High Court in Australia recently where a government employee had originally successfully sued for compensation over an injury sustained whilst having sex in a hotel room whilst on a business trip, the fact that the case ended up in the High Court must ring alarm bells for all employers. Of course the actual threats out there to the security for international business travellers are rather more significant than those mentioned in the recent Australian Court case and can range from crime though to terrorism, and will of course be specific to the destination. Although, given the ease of international travel both for business travellers and would be terrorists alike, the days of having totally safe destinations are sadly behind us. Travel to all destinations includes the risk to a greater or lesser extent from low-level crime, which can be at the very least a great distraction from the business focus of a trip, a high-profile example being that suffered by tennis star Juan Martin del Potro, victim of a distraction robbery at the Gard du Nord railway station Paris, who suffered the loss of a number of treasured items, not least of which were his passport, money and a rosary blessed by his fellow Argentinian Pope Francis. This was whilst travelling between tournaments in Paris and London and can only have had a negative effect on his performance. Potentially more serious and certainly more physically dangerous is the threat of terrorism. A Communiqué on the growing threat of kidnapping for ransom, issued in July 2013 by the Office of the British Prime Minister David Cameron stated that kidnapping for ransom is the preferred method of financing for Al Qaeda and represents a growing threat. There is also the issue of information security, an employee of contractor may be travelling with economically sensitive information and travellers need to be aware of the danger that wireless communications may be intercepted, either by criminals or even industry competitors.

It is strongly advised that both employers and travellers themselves take responsibility for security, and undertake some initial training, prior to departure. Obtaining pre travel destination intelligence assessments will show due diligence, and highlight the need, if any, for further traveller security training. Any training provided should also consider the gender of the traveller and should at the very least include some basic emergency protocols to cover any eventuality.

Given the number of other tasks both employers and business travellers themselves may be handling it is small wonder that the security for international business travellers is usually neglected, which is why it may be sensible to contract one of the international security consultants that specialise in providing these services. Security is a bit like insurance, hopefully you do not need it, but when disaster strikes, you will be very glad you have it.
